Mission Statement:
CYT@school is devoted to introducing performing arts to children, one school at a time, by providing a high-quality experience that is educational and enjoyable
Many schools have had to cut their arts programs so CYT@school is dedicated to bringing to your school a low-cost, after school program developed to support the performing arts training in public and private schools. Research has shown that performing arts helps students gain confidence, build leadership skills and develop a sense of community. CYT wants to ensure that students everywhere have an opportunity to experience theater arts.
Our program consists of 8 weeks of drama, voice and dance which offer sound theater art instruction while also building character. All participating students will perform in an end-of-session showcase that is literature based while still being very popular with students. Our teachers are enthusiastic, fun, positive role models who lead and inspire.
CYT curriculum is based on visual and performing arts content standards for California public schools, Pre-K thru grades 12. There are two components to our program. One is introducing many of the California theatre content standards, and the second is to apply those standards in a performance showcase for family and friends. CYT is certified through the San Diego County Office of Education Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA).
CYT, the national leader in children’s theater, would like to bring you performing arts!
The program is called CYT@school – your school! It’s a low-cost program, which was developed to support performing arts training, as many schools have had to cut their arts’ curriculum. CYT wanted to tap into its 30 years of children’s theater to ensure that students everywhere have the opportunity to experience theater arts. Research has shown that performing arts help students gain confidence and build leadership skills, both of which help students do better in school and in life.
Our traditional program consists of 8 weeks of drama, voice and dance. All students will perform in the end-of-session performance showcase. Our curriculum offers sound theater arts instruction and a quality experience. And our teaching artists are enthusiastic, fun, positive role models - they will inspire your students to do their best.
Some questions you might have…
How is the program set up?
There are two components to our program. One is introducing many of the California theatre content standards, and the second is to apply those standards in a performance showcase for family and friends. Two qualified teaching artists work together to instruct and direct the children.
In our after school program the learning takes place two afternoons a week: one afternoon is for younger children and the second afternoon is for the older children. We are happy to provide a once-a-week program for smaller schools.
In our residence program we teach performing arts as part of the curriculum during the school day for specific grades or classes depending on the needs of the school.
Which schools have had CYT@school at their school?
In the last several years we have provided performing arts to over 3,000 students! Most of our schools plan to have us for one session each year and some plan to have us each session throughout the school year.
Since it’s rebirth in 2005 we’ve been at these schools*
Our showcases are familiar works that are abridged versions of recognizable, family shows. They have been adapted to maximize ensemble numbers. In our traditional model the younger class will be working on one half of the showcase and the older class will be working on the other half. During Weeks 7 & 8 both groups will be put together, which is when all students come to rehearsals on both program days. Although this is the standard we have designed programs that meet more often and some that meet only once a week. We will work with you to meet the needs of the school.
We like to schedule a performance in the evening at the end of the 8-week session. Each student receives a CYT@school t-shirt to wear, along with a costume piece that is provided. We use no sets and props are minimal. If parents want to provide extras, that can be coordinated with the teaching artists.
Do you offer programs specific to the older grades?
Yes! We started a theater arts academy in partnership with Escondido Charter High School and have had residency and after school programs at local middle schools. The length of the session, the curriculum and other specifics can be worked out between the director and the school contact.
Isn’t CYT a Christian group? How would that work?
Although we adhere to Judeo-Christian values, we are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational organization, not a religious one. We would respect the appropriate boundaries in any school setting. We are going to schools to introduce theater arts - we will honor that opportunity.
Won’t there be a lot for us to do as a school to get started?
There is very little start up for the school. You just need to decide where we can hold classes and where the end-of-session performance will be. CYT will create and print as many registration forms as you need. The school simply needs to distribute them, and then collect the completed forms. We’ll collect these, with your payment, from your school office.
Is every student welcome?
Yes. Please let us know if your child has needs that we should be aware of.
What is the cost for each student?
For the after school program the cost is $100 per student. That can be sponsored by a parent organization, arts funding, etc. to bring the cost per student down. The fee includes a CYT@school t-shirt, a CD and the script. For other program types you will need to get a quote from the director.
When can we get started?
Right away! We offer 8-week sessions throughout the school year in fall, winter and spring. Contact us today to get more information on how you can have CYT@school at your school!
