Class Description

This course is designed to help students develop an appreciation for sketch comedy as well as the art of writing sketch comedy, and performing for the camera. Students will have fun working with their own team of writers to create fun sketches for Showcase!
Upon completion of this course, students will have practice in the following areas:
  • Developing characters and storylines
  • Editing sketches and learning different forms of layout
  • Learning different methods of overcoming writers block
  • Working with other students on a “writing team” to develop teamwork skills
  • Determining which sketches can be performed in front of a live audience and which ones are better suited for video editing; and what is involved in both circumstances
  • Understanding seven different comedy sketch formats
  • Incorporating the various aspects of comedy sketch writing into their own sketches that they will write and perform for showcase
Note: there will be no class on December 25th, January 1st, February 19th.

Ryan Tafolla

Ryan Daniel Tafolla is a musician, performer, producer and instrumentalist. A 2017 Graduate at Musicians Institute LA for guitar performance, Ryan got his start in performing with Christian Youth Theater, totaling 33 productions before graduating. He can be found playing on Sunday mornings as the Worship Director at Newbreak Ocean Beach, and teaching private guitar lessons all over San Diego, as well as directing, teaching and coaching the improv team for CYT San Diego. An Ocean Beach native, Ryan is the lead guitarist for the indie surf rock group Dive Vibe.
